Biography

Alan Schechner has been playing the drums since the age of 11. He formally studied music from junior high through college where he earned an A.A. degree in music. In addition, he took 16 years of private lessons in technique, reading, soloing, and multiple musical styles from teaching legend Chuck Brown. This prepared him for work with Eric Martin (vocalist with “Mr. Big”), as well as numerous other pop, rock, world, Top 40, and R&B bands, and stints performing for musical theater, opera, and symphony orchestras. He was also a national finalist in the Guitar Center Drum-Off competition.

A dedicated educator and performer, Alan teaches privately in San Rafael, California, and is the author of the highly acclaimed book, “The Art Of Transcribing-Drum Set Book One”, published by Mel Bay, and available at The Magic Flute. His follow up book, “The Art Of Transcribing-Drum Set Book Two”, is coming soon. Alan has also released an instructional DVD entitled, “Coordination and Groove”, which is available at The Magic Flute as well.
