Rita Thies is an active musician with 30 years of teaching and performing experience on all saxophones and flutes. Her versatility has allowed her to perform and record with a wide range of artists including Mariah Carey, Kenny G., Carlos Santana, John Lee Hooker, Jessie Collin Young, Sheila E., Pete Escovedo, Zigaboo Modeliste (of The Meters), Steve Smith (of Journey), Chris Hayes and Johnny Colla (of Huey Lewis and The News) and she is currently performing and recording with Brass, Bows and Beats, a 40 piece Hip-Hop orchestra. (Live CD recorded at the Palace Of Fine Arts in San Francisco has just been released.)
Rita is now accepting students at her San Rafael studio/home. She has taught at Mt Tam School in Mill Valley for 20 years, and is on the teaching staff of Dominican University, as well as Davidson Middle School both in San Rafael. Her students consistently receive outstanding musicianship awards, and scholarships to leading music schools.
Styles include Classical, Jazz, R&B, Funk, Latin and Irish.
Studies include the fundamentals of good tone production breathing, posture, reading, playing by ear, soloing (improvising), and performance.
In her teaching, Rita focuses on a strong musical foundation but also creates a relaxed and supportive environment where students are encouraged to play music for fun and enjoyment.
